Tom Powell's Run for Suffolk
Friday, October 17, 2008
With umbrellas in hand, a small cast of enthusiastic supporters cheered as Tom Powell, candidate for Mayor of Suffolk, crossed the border from Suffolk into Isle of Wight County at the Chuckatuck Creek Bridge. Over 30 people came out to watch Powell's historic crossing of the finish line bringing Powell's day-long 30.5 mile run across the length of Suffolk to a close. This feat was no small undertaking as Suffolk is the largest city in Virginia with 430 square miles.
Powell began his run Friday morning at 7am at the border of South Suffolk at Gates County, North Carolina. Powell then traveled through all 7 boroughs to show his commitment to representing every voice in Suffolk. 10 people joined with Powell on different legs of the journey in his run across Suffolk.
Lance Carmine, a business associate and fellow runner commented that "in terms of showing a candidate's commitment to the people of Suffolk there will be nothing equal to it now or for years to come." Carmine also believes that the run is representative of the "energy and commitment that Tom Powell will bring to City Hall on behalf of the people of Suffolk."
Powell, at the end of the run, stated that the experience "showed me Suffolk from a whole new perspective." He also emphasized the reason he "ran" the city. He stated, "I want everything I say and do to show how committed I am to serving every citizen in Suffolk. This is one more way that I could show that commitment."
Powell's run finished 2 hours ahead of schedule allowing him time to speak with the group who gathered to support him at his final stop before completing the run. Powell officially finished the run, despite the rain, by crossing the finish line at 6:05 pm on Friday.
